Romany's Vardo in its former site in Wilmslow

Romany’s Vardo in its former site in Wilmslow

Romany Society Events

The Society organises a series of events each year, with a residential weekend in the autumn, visiting sites associated with Romany’s life, or used by Romany in his books and broadcasts.

Until 2013 we also had open events at Romany’s Vardo, which stood in his memorial garden in Wilmslow.

The vardo has now been moved elsewhere (see the full story on the Vardo Appeal page) and so these open days have ceased.

New event May 2024: A guided walk to Old Parks Farm and Romany’s memorial on Monday 27th May at 2pm.

The walk will take in the beautiful area, a favourite area for Romany where he wandered observing wildlife around him, and inspiring his later radio broadcasts.

Also to view the new information panel and Romany’s memorial birdbath.

  • Length of walk 1 + hour, farmyard and grassy field.
  • Parking on the road at the entrance to Old Parks Farm, near Glassonby, Cumbria (7 miles NE of Penrith). Disabled parking in the farmyard.

IMPORTANT: The Romany Society has closed. The last formal Society event, marking the 80th anniversary of Romany’s death, was held in Wilmslow in November 2023.  The last Romany Society Magazine, the issue for 2023 (number 28 in the new series), was circulated in March 2024. The website will continue to exist until a decision is made on how best to continue online information.

Position Statement: The Romany Society, as at 12 July 2023.

An Annual General Meeting on 13 May 2023 resulted in a formal request by members for an Extraordinary General Meeting to  be held to discuss whether the Romany Society should be wound up due to the inability to secure a Chairman or a Secretary and following other resignations from the Executive Committee.

The EGM on 17 June 2023 resulted in a vote to wind-up the Society’s affairs. For more details visit our News page.

Extraordinary General Meeting on 17th June 2023

Following our recent AGM on 13th May in Wilmslow an EGM has been called for and will be held at 10.30 am on Saturday 17th June in Room B of the United Reform Church, Chapel Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 1PR. This is an important meeting to ratify a resolution to dissolve the Society in line with its constitution. This follows the failure to elect new officers at the AGM.

If you cannot attend in person attendance via Zoom is possible – please contact Stuart Redgard for details:  Apologies or comments can be sent to Derrick Murdie:
